Fantasy football waiver wire, Week 12 picks: Best players to add include Jordan Reed, Alexander Mattison.
Hall of Fame Fantasy expert Scott Engel pinpoints the best waiver wire picks ahead of Week 12.
Building depth as the Fantasy football playoffs approach is important, and some notable players are appearing on the radar in time for the postseason push. New York Jets wide receiver Denzel Mims averaged nearly 24 yards per catch on Sunday. Should Mims be your No. 1 choice above all other Week 12 NFL Fantasy Football waiver wire targets? Seattle Seahawks running back Rashaad Penny may return from a knee injury very soon.
Should Penny be one of your top Week 12 Fantasy Football waiver wire targets? Which players on Fantasy football waivers are worth grabbing? Before determining your Week 12 Fantasy football waiver wire strategy, be sure to see what SportsLine's resident Hall of Famer, Scott Engel, has to say.
Engel is an inaugural member of the Fantasy Sports Writers Association's Hall of Fame. He is a four-time FSWA Award Winner and nine-time finalist, and has pulled off a three-peat in his prestigious New York City Fantasy Football League that includes other experts and high-stakes players.
Engel is 103-60-2 in his seasonal Fantasy football leagues after 11 weeks. This season, he was all over Justin Herbert, Mike Davis and Tim Patrick as recommended adds in advance of their breakthrough performances. He also tipped Fantasy players off to Carlos Hyde as an emergency option.
Top Fantasy football waiver wire picks for Week 12.
One player Engel is advising Fantasy players to target on the Week 12 waiver wire: San Francisco 49ers tight end Jordan Reed. Many Fantasy players need to solve their problem at tight end before the playoffs start. Unless you have one of the top-tier tight ends on your roster (Travis Kelce, Darren Waller, Mark Andrews. T.J. Hockenson) you have been frustrated with your options and have tried different players at the position without much consistent success.
Engel says Reed could be the solution to the tight end problem that has plagued your team for most of the season. He is still widely available in many Fantasy football leagues because he went largely unclaimed during San Francisco's Week 11 bye.
Many Fantasy players make the mistake of dropping or not claiming players when they are on byes, and now you can take advantage of that error by putting in a waiver claim for Reed. With George Kittle (foot) out, Reed should be the No. 1 tight end target in the 49ers offense until further notice.
Even when Kittle is not in the mix, the tight end position remains a key element in the San Francisco offense. Reed caught five passes for 62 yards in Week 9 vs. New Orleans. He also scored two TDs in a game earlier this season while filling in for an injured Kittle. While Reed does have a long and very detailed history of injuries, you have to add and start him while he is available.
Another waiver wire target Engel is all over entering Week 12: Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison. He is still available in many leagues, and could instantly become a quality starting option in an instant during the Fantasy playoffs. Dalvin Cook is one of the elite running backs in Fantasy football, but his injury history is well-documented. Mattison could be asked to start for Minnesota at any time in the upcoming weeks, so he should be on your bench in case he gets the call.
Cook already missed a game this season with a groin injury, and has never played a full season in his career so far. It is very important to have players on your roster that can step in and start for you during the Fantasy postseason. Mattison is a prime example. He rushed for 112 yards in relief of Cook in the second half of the Vikings' Week 5 game, and is one of the better No. 2 running backs in the NFL.
How to set your Week 12 waiver wire claims.
Engel is also all-in on a wide receiver who should be an immediate add. This player is still widely available and could be a huge boost to your Fantasy football lineup moving forward. You can only see who it is at SportsLine.
So which players should you target on the Fantasy football waiver wire before Week 12? And which wide receiver is a must-add? Visit SportsLine now to see the best league-winning Fantasy football free agents entering Week 12, all from a Fantasy Hall of Famer, and find out.

5 breakout fantasy football stars to pick up for Week 12.
GLENDALE, ARIZONA – NOVEMBER 15: Wide receiver John Brown #15 of the Buffalo Bills runs with the football after a reception against the Arizona Cardinals during the NFL game at State Farm Stadium on November 15, 2020 in Glendale, Arizona. In the market for some fantasy advice? Here are five potential stars for Week 12.
Yahoo rosters: 54%
At this point, it is still interesting that Wayne Gallman is considered a sleeper and that his roster percentages are so low. Of course, his stock is soaring, so those numbers can change fast. So, if he is available in your league, it would be hard to pass him up.
Why? Gallman has been in and out of the lineup for the Giants throughout his four-year career. Before, he saw his role lessen due to star Saquon Barkley being so involved as an every-down running back. Since Barkley’s injury, Gallman’s role has become much larger.
Even after Barkley went down injured, Gallman had to wait a bit as the team gave free agent Devonta Freeman a chance. Like Barkley, he, unfortunately, landed on the sidelines with an injury too.
Therefore, the featured running back duties have fallen on the shoulders of Gallman, and he has been rather effective.
Since Week 7, Gallman has scored at least one touchdown in each game he has played in, which comes out to four consecutive games with a score. His yardage totals have not been eye popping, but the touchdowns are the most important part to you as a fantasy general manager. In the team’s last game, he scored two in a win against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Gallman has totaled 199 rushing yards and five touchdowns in his last four games. Coming out of the bye, the Giants will play the Cincinnati Bengals on the road. This looks like another favorable matchup for Gallman.
The Giants do not score a lot of touchdowns. Although, the next matchup is against a team that has given up a fair amount of points. Also, when the Giants do get into the redzone, offensive coordinator Jason Garrett appears to love to keep it on the ground.
Touchdown potential is the key, and Gallman has that this week against the Bengals.

Start em, Sit em: NFL Week 12 Fantasy Football Lineup Picks.
November 27, 2020.
We only have a couple of weeks left before the fantasy football playoffs start in some leagues. If you’re on the cusp of making it in your league, making the correct start ‘em sit ‘em picks could be the difference. Let’s discuss what to expect from a couple of players at each position based on their respective matchups in Week 12.
Fantasy Football Advice: Week 12 Start ‘Em Sit ‘Em Picks.
Quarter back: Start ‘Em.
Derek Carr, LV (at ATL)
Carr is on pace for one of the best seasons of his career. After throwing 22 or fewer touchdown passes in each of the last three seasons, he already has 19 through 10 games. His completion rate has also remained high at 69.7%, which would be the second-highest mark of his career. Things couldn’t set up much better for him in this matchup against the Falcons, who have allowed the second-most passing yards per game and are tied for the second-most passing touchdowns allowed in the league.
Quarterback: Sit ‘Em.
Baker Mayfield, CLE (at JAC)
This might seem like a favorable matchup to take a chance on starting Mayfield if you are thin at quarterback. The Jaguars have not only allowed an average of 29.8 points per game, but they have also allowed the fourth-most passing yards per contest. However, this game also has blowout potential with Mike Glennon set to start for the Jaguars. The Browns already run the ball a lot, so Mayfield might not be needed to throw much to help the Browns earn a victory. It’s also concerning that Mayfield has thrown one or no touchdown passes in four of his last five games. He’s a no-go pick in Week 12.
Running Back: Start ‘Em.
Wayne Gallman, NYG (at CIN)
The Giants will remain without Devonta Freeman (ankle) for this game, meaning Gallman should once again receive the majority of their carries out of the backfield. Across the last three games with Freeman out, Gallman has rushed for 165 yards and four touchdowns. He even found his way into the end zone in Week 7 against the Eagles, which is the game that Freeman suffered the injury. The Bengals have allowed the fourth-most rushing yards per game, which also works in Gallman’s favor.
Running Back: Sit ‘Em.
Darrell Henderson, LAR (vs. SF)
The Rams’ backfield is becoming a mess. When given the opportunity, Henderson has played well, registering at least 63 rushing yards or a touchdown in all five games in which he has received at least 12 carries. The problem is that he hasn’t received more than eight carries in any of the last three games, leaving him with a total of 80 yards and a touchdown. With Malcolm Brown and Cam Akers both healthy, Henderson could continue to receive limited work.
Wide Receiver: Start ‘Em.
Travis Fulgham, PHI (vs. SEA)
It’s been a disastrous couple of weeks for Fulgham, who has two catches for 16 yards across the last two games. Carson Wentz has looked awful, which hasn’t helped his cause. On the bright side, Fulgham did receive 12 targets across those contests. This is a great matchup against a Seahawks team that has allowed the most passing yards per game, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Fulgham break out of his slump given that he is still receiving a significant number of targets.
Wide Receiver: Sit ‘Em.
A.J. Green, CIN (vs. NYG)
The Bengals received tough news this week when star rookie quarterback Joe Burrow was diagnosed with a torn ACL and MCL. Not only will he be out for the rest of this season, but he could miss the start of 2021, as well. They will now turn to Brandon Allen , who had been on the practice squad, to start against the Giants. Across three appearances with the Broncos last season, Allen completed only 46.4% of his pass attempts for 515 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. Green has already been an inconsistent fantasy option, so the downgrade at quarterback isn’t likely to make things any better.
Tight End: Start ‘Em.
Hayden Hurst, ATL (vs. LV)
A key injury situation to monitor is whether or not Julio Jones (hamstring) will be able to take the field for the Falcons. As of Friday morning, he appears to be trending towards being a game-time decision. If he were to be sidelined, then Hurst could see additional targets. Even if Jones does play, Hurst is still a viable starting option considering the Raiders have allowed the fifth-most passing yards per game. He’s a solid pick for Week 12.
Tight End: Sit ‘Em.
Jared Cook, NO (at DEN)
Taysom Hill taking over at quarterback for the Saints was not good news for Cook last week, who caught his only target for six yards. Over the last three games, Cook has a total of three catches for 36 yards on six targets. What’s really concerning is that he played no more than 37.9% of their offensive snaps in any of those three contests. By comparison, he was on the field for at least 48.6% of their offensive snaps in five of their first six games. He’s very much reliant on touchdowns to provide value, which could be a problem against a Broncos team that has allowed only two touchdowns to tight ends all season.
