п»їPackers realize how much Rodgers has at stake this weekend.
Steve Megargee, Ap Sports Writer.
Updated 8:38 pm EST, Wednesday, January 20, 2021.
Aaron Rodgers’ Green Bay Packers teammates understand what this NFC championship game means to the All-Pro quarterback’s legacy.
Rodgers has delivered the kind of season that puts him in contention for a third MVP honor, which would match the total won by Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady.
The Super Bowl count between the two NFC championship game quarterbacks is more one-sided. Brady won six Super Bowl titles and appeared in nine overall while starring for the New England Patriots. Rodgers led the Packers to a Super Bowl crown in the 2010 season, but hasn’t brought them back since.
“You look at Brady and everybody wants to make that comparison forever, but it’s basically turned into a quarterback stat: Super Bowls,” Packers All-Pro wide receiver Davante Adams said.
“If that’s what it’s going to be, then obviously we’re going to put as much as we can on ourselves to try to help him get there and, ultimately, relieve him of the Super Bowls being a thing that hinder him from being the GOAT (greatest of all time). In my mind, he’s the GOAT, regardless of how many Super Bowl are won.”
Rodgers’ brilliant season has included just one outright dud. It occurred the previous time these two teams met.
Green Bay led Tampa Bay 10-0 early in the second quarter back on Oct. 18 until Jamel Dean scored on a 32-yard interception return. Rodgers’ next pass was picked off by Mike Edwards and returned 38 yards to the Green Bay 2-yard line, setting up another touchdown.
After the Packers lost 38-10, Rodgers called the performance a wakeup call and kick in the rear for an offense that had moved the ball virtually at will up to that point.

The Packers haven’t been held below 22 points since. They’ll be chasing their eighth consecutive victory when the Packers (14-3) host the Bucs (13-5) on Sunday.
“We’ve been playing the right way, and I feel like the way we’ve been winning has been better than early in the season,” Rodgers said. “We’ve been playing a lot better on both sides of the ball.”
The performance at Tampa Bay was out of character for someone who protects the ball so well.
Rodgers completed 45.7% of his passes for 160 yards with two interceptions and no touchdowns that day. In the Packers’ other 16 games, he has completed 71.9% of his passes for 4,435 yards with 50 touchdowns and three interceptions.
He has been picked off just five times in 562 pass attempts this season (526 in the regular season, 36 in a playoff victory over the Los Angeles Rams). His only other multi-interception game over the past three seasons came when he was picked off twice in last year’s NFC championship game loss at San Francisco.
“When you throw five interceptions and throw the ball 526 times, that’s amazing,” said Rich Gannon, a former NFL quarterback who now works for CBS Sports.
“You’re going to get the ball tipped, deflected. Balls are going to go through the hands of a receiver. Something bad going's to happen. Yet he’s thrown five picks. I think in the last three years, he’s thrown 11 picks. Think about that. You throw 38 touchdown passes and 11 picks in a season, you’d think that’s pretty good. 11 picks in three years.
“He’s been the best in the last decade at ball security. There’s no one who’s been better.”
This marks Rodgers’ fourth NFC championship game appearance over the past seven years. All of Rodgers’ previous starts in the NFC championship games came on the road.
Green Bay has finished the regular season 13-3 each of the past two years, but looks far more imposing this time around.
“A lot of people didn’t think we’d be back here after last season,” Rodgers said. “We got a lot of interesting comments last year about us being the worst 13-3 team that people had seen. Not the same type of comments this year. Obviously we’re clicking a lot better on offense.”
This may represent the 37-year-old Rodgers’ best chance to get back to another Super Bowl, though he says he isn’t dwelling on his future with so much at stake right now.
“I hope there’s more opportunities, but I don’t know,” Rodgers said. “I mean, I really don’t. That stuff is out of my control. My future is a beautiful mystery, I think. The present is such a gift to be able to stay in the moment and to have gratitude for being in this situation again, and being with the guys and having fans in our stadium and maybe snow in an NFC championship game. I’m going to enjoy these moments for sure, and just not worry about what happens down the line.”

After 4-0 weekend, can Pro Picks get Super Bowl teams right?
Barry Wilner, Ap Pro Football Writer.
Updated 2:25 pm EST, Friday, January 22, 2021.
Not to brag — well, yes, to BRAG — Pro Picks was perfect straight up last weekend, selecting all four winners in the NFL's divisional round.
The problem with conference championship weekend is simple: We are torn. Any of the four not only can get to the Super Bowl, but win it.
Some might want to evaluate the remaining teams by quarterback pedigree, from Tom Brady to Aaron Rodgers to Patrick Mahomes to Josh Allen. Others will examine the coaches: Andy Reid, Sean McDermott, Bruce Arians and Matt LaFleur.
Still others pore through stats.
And then there's the old Ouija board.
We're a bit more scientific. But only a bit.
TAMPA BAY (plus 3 1/2) at GREEN BAY.

Such a delicious menu. Starting with Brady and Rodgers, naturally. Rodgers and Brady have never faced off in the postseason.
Super Bowls for much of the last two decades have been about Brady. He proved his greatness in taking New England to nine of them, winning six. He's recertifying that in his first season with the Buccaneers (13-5).
As a reminder, Brady holds postseason records for starts (43), victories (32), completions (1,065), passing yards (11,968), passing touchdowns (77). Only Peyton Manning, Kurt Warner and Craig Morton led two separate franchises into the Super Bowl.
This is the best array of offensive talent with Brady since he had Randy Moss in the record-setting 2007 season. And while Tampa Bay's defense isn't overpowering, it's the most solid of the four units still playing, particularly at linebacker.
Rodgers is in the midst of perhaps his best season, and he has already won two NFL MVP awards as well as the 2010 league title. His work with favorite receiver and fellow All-Pro Davante Adams has been exemplary, catapulting Green Bay to a second straight 13-3 mark.
“A lot of people didn’t think we’d be back here after last season,” Rodgers said. “We got a lot of interesting comments last year about us being the worst 13-3 team that people had seen. Not the same type of comments this year.”
Nope. The Packers are steady enough on defense, though they can be vulnerable against the run. They play such precise football, yet with imagination, a difficult blend.
It's going to be cold but probably not frigid at Lambeau Field, not that Brady and Rob Gronkowski will be uncomfortable. And the Bucs have won a franchise-record seven consecutive road games, including playoff wins at Washington and New Orleans.
Will they head back to Tampa to appear in a Super Bowl at their home stadium, an NFL first?
PACKERS 30, BUCCANEERS 27.
BUFFALO (plus 3 1/2) at KANSAS CITY.
As the reigning champions seek to become the first to repeat since Brady and the Patriots for the 2003 and 2004 seasons, they have to be at least a bit concerned that Mahomes left last week's victory with a concussion. The Chiefs aren't going to advance with Chad Henne at the helm.
Of course, Mahomes could be fine and as magical as usual. He has all the targets he needs in unanimous All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce, another All-Pro in WR Tyreek Hill, and company. Kansas City's defense, led by yet another All-Pro in safety Tyrann Mathieu, gets overlooked for how improved it is.
The Chiefs are at home, will have some 17,000 very loud fans on hand, and carry the confidence and swagger from what they achieved last season.
And here comes Buffalo, which has been the AFC's best team the last two months. There is a solid balance between offense and defense on a roster that has matured impressively. The Allen to league receptions leader Stefon Diggs connection is as good as Rodgers to Adams. Allen is more of a threat to run for big plays than Mahomes — though not by much if Mahomes is healthy — and also has a deep receiving corps.
Where Buffalo must show its skill most is in pass coverage. Cornerback Tre'Davious White is superb, and the rest of the relatively unnoticed secondary is very capable. Look for plenty of big plays in this one.
We swear that Bills Mafia is not pressuring us. Yet .

Alaska House picks freshman Patkotak as temporary speaker.
JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — The Alaska House voted Thursday to elect freshman Rep. Josiah Patkotak as temporary speaker but remained unorganized, with no majority in charge, more than two weeks into the legislative session.
Patkotak, an independent from Utqiagvik, took over for Lt. Gov. Kevin Meyer, who had been presiding over House floor sessions for the purpose of electing a temporary speaker. Prior nominations of other members leading to Thursday had failed.
Patkotak was elected 39-0, with Democratic Rep. Geran Tarr of Anchorage shown as absent.
Patkotak has been voting with a 20-member bloc, largely composed of Democrats but that also includes independents and Republican Rep. Louise Stutes of Kodiak. There also is a 20-member Republican group. Rep. Mike Cronk of Tok, a member of the Republican group, nominated Patkotak on Thursday.
In a statement, released under the coalition header, Patkotak said he remains committed to the “Bush Caucus as we work to achieve a permanent organization in the House.” Lawmakers from rural areas have in the past banded together to advance and protect rural interests as part of such a caucus.
Some rural lawmakers also have previously joined with majority organizations.
Both the bipartisan coalition and House Republicans put out statements Thursday touting Patkotak's selection.

NFL picks 3 honorary captains, Amanda Gorman for coin toss.
NEW YORK (AP) — The NFL has selected three people who have served during the coronavirus pandemic as honorary captains for the Super Bowl along with inaugural poet Amanda Gorman for an original poem.
Commissioner Roger Goodell announced Wednesday that educator Trimaine Davis, nurse manager Suzie Dorner and Marine veteran James Martin will take part in the coin toss on Feb. 7 in Tampa, Florida. The trio was picked for embodying the NFL's message of “It Takes All of Us” this season.
Gorman, the country’s first National Youth Poet Laureate, recited “The Hill We Climb” at the Biden inauguration Jan. 20. She will recite her poem about the trio's impact before the game, which will be televised and shown inside Raymond James Stadium.
Davis made sure to get his students and their families in Los Angeles devices and internet access, and he also hosted tech workshops to help people learn how to use the devices.
Dorner, who lost two grandparents to COVID-19, is the COVID ICU nurse manager at Tampa General Hospital and represents healthcare workers across the country as honorary captain.
Martin helped veterans, high school athletes and local youth connect virtually through the Wounded Warrior Project and by livestreaming events in Pittsburgh. He volunteered to livestream every home football game for Aliquippa High School so families could watch. He also has taken in needy children in his neighborhood.
“During this incredibly challenging time in our lives, Trimaine, Suzie, and James have exemplified the essence of leadership, each in their own way,” Goodell said. “We are grateful for their commitment and proud to share their stories and recognize them during this special moment on Super Bowl Sunday.”

Jags hire ex-49ers exec Baalke as GM, removing interim tag.
Mark Long, Ap Sports Writer.
Updated 4:49 pm EST, Thursday, January 21, 2021.
Urban Meyer and Trent Baalke first met 16 years ago, before the San Francisco 49ers drafted quarterback Alex Smith with the No. 1 pick in 2005.
Meyer was Smith's college coach at Utah, and Baalke was a western region scout for the Niners.
They really got to know each other in the past two weeks in Jacksonville. And there's little doubt they shared stories about Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh.
Meyer went 4-0 against Harbaugh during his tenure at Ohio State; Baalke clashed with Harbaugh during their time in San Francisco and was the one who essentially pushed Harbaugh out the door after an 8-8 season that followed three consecutive trips to the NFC championship game.
Harbaugh might even serve as the unlikely bonding agent between Jacksonville's new head coach and its new general manager.
The Jaguars officially announced Baalke as GM on Thursday, removing the interim tag from his title and pairing him with Meyer in what both of them called a “partnership” and an “alignment.”
Team owner Shad Khan said the duo is “aligned contractually.”
More News.
Prep Profile: CBA's Caroline Holdeman NU football signs 36 recruits, including one Chemic.
“How long that might be? I’m not ready to say, but it’s a long time, OK,” Khan said. "But I think this was really very, very important to me. . Don’t want to overstate it: it’s a defining moment for the franchise.”
Khan is switching to a coach-centric model in which Meyer and Baalke will both report to him to “have transparency and (fill) the needs and concerns of both parties without really getting filtered or have a chain of command.” Meyer, though, is expected to have final say over the roster and most everything else.
Baalke served as Jacksonville’s director of pro personnel in 2020, returning to a front-office role for the first time since San Francisco fired him and coach Chip Kelly following the 2016 season.
Baalke spent a dozen years with the 49ers, half as GM. He hired Harbaugh, who led the Niners to the NFC title game in each of his first three seasons and lost Super Bowl 47. Baalke also drafted quarterback Colin Kaepernick in the second round in 2011.
Before moving to Jacksonville, Baalke spent three years (2017-19) working as an operations consultant for the NFL.
“It’s an opportunity that I never knew would come again,” said Baalke, who already added longtime NFL personnel executive Tom Gamble to his staff. “Not many people get a second chance.”
It's even more rare considering Baalke's final two years in San Francisco included one-and-done coaches Jim Tomsula and Kelly.
“I think you learn at every stop," Baalke said. “You learn more probably from the mistakes you made over your career than you do the positive things. I’ve learned a lot about handling, working with coaches, a lot about dealing and working with players, a lot about team building and what it takes.
“Spending a lot of time with Coach Meyer in the past couple weeks, I’ve learned a tremendous amount. I think life’s a journey. I think learning is a journey. I think every day when you wake up, if you’re not waking up with the mentality that you’re going to learn something, you’re missing something.”
Jacksonville had one of the league’s most attractive coach/GM openings. The Jaguars have 11 picks in the 2021 draft, including four in the top 45, and are nearly $100 million under the projected salary cap.
Although Alex Smith first brought them together, Meyer and Baalke might be forever linked by the 2021 No. 1 pick — a virtual lock to be Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence.
“I think we all know there’s a couple incredible players out there, but my focus has been on the staff,” Meyer said. "To say we haven’t talked about it, of course we have. That’s going to be a deep, deep dive.”
