п»їJoker Phillips to leave Maryland for North Carolina State wide receivers job, per reports.
The North Carolina State University is hiring Maryland wide receivers coach Joker Phillips for the same role with the Wolfpack, according to multiple reports Tuesday.
В© Matt Stone/The Courier-Journal Former UK head football coach Joker Phillips acknowledges the crowd as he heads to watch Florida's team warm up before a game against Kentucky at Commonwealth Stadium.
Phillips, 57, was the wide receivers coach for the University of Cincinnati Bearcats in 2017 and 2018, and he coached WRs at UC in 1997 and defensive backs in 1998. He was the University of Kentucky Wildcats' head coach from 2010 to 2012, and was an assistant at UK from 1988 to 1996 and again from 2003 to 2009.
Phillips was the Terrapins' co-offensive coordinator in addition to coaching receivers for the past two seasons.
Phillips also played receiver at UK from 1981 to 1984.

Georgia vs. Cincinnati. Line: Georgia by 7. Friday, 12:00 p.m.
What's the motivation for Georgia? The Bulldogs had aspirations of playing in meaningful January games. Instead, they're matched up against boring, old Cincinnati. The Bearcats will want to prove that they belonged in the playoffs. With this spread bloated, we're getting good value with Cincinnati anyway.

Notre Dame vs. Alabama. Line: Alabama by 19.5. Friday, 4:00 p.m.
I love betting on great coaches with extra time to prepare. That obviously applies here, as Nick Saban will know how to attack the Irish. Meanwhile, Notre Dame will lose its 719th-consecutive bowl game.

College Football Pick: Alabama -19.5 -108 (2 Units) - Bookmaker.
Ohio State vs. Clemson. Line: Clemson by 7. Friday, 8:00 p.m.
The sharps are betting the Buckeyes, and I'm not quite sure why. Ohio State's secondary is trash, so Trevor Lawrence won't have an issue torching it. Meanwhile, Justin Fields was dealing with an injury late in the year. I'm not sure if he's healthy yet, but if he's not, he won't be able to keep up with Lawrence.

Texas A&M vs. North Carolina. Line: Texas A&M by 7.5. Saturday, 8:00 p.m.
Texas A&M got absolutely screwed by the college football playoff committee. They deserved to make the playoff over both Notre Dame and Ohio State. However, they're just not going to have the motivation to play this game over a nondescript North Carolina squad.
Ohio State vs. Alabama. Line: Alabama by 9. Monday, 8:00.
We had two tough beats in earlier picks, but Ohio State covering was not one of them. The Buckeyes were terrific against Clemson, as Justin Fields was much healthier than he was in the Big Ten championship. He got banged up in the semi-final, but with extra time to heal, he should be fine for this game. If so, I like him to cover the spread. I love getting a touchdown or more with great quarterbacks, as there will definitely be back-door potential. I like Alabama to win this game, but the Buckeyes should be able to keep it close.

The Joker is here: Lynn Bowden Jr. can elevate the Raiders offense.
The Las Vegas Raiders offense was beyond solid last year. After finishing in the top-ten in almost every efficiency metric, the Raiders still were missing pieces to score points and take it to the next level.
Then came the draft which was supposed to be one the deepest the league has seen since 2014 for wide receivers. A player who was starting-caliber was available in the later rounds and the Raiders pounced like lions on gazelles in the wild.
They drafted three wide receivers with their first four picks in the draft, adding depth to a much-needed position, but one player is bound to a unique role. That man is Lynn Bowden from Kentucky, who will be playing the Joker role.
What is the Joker’s Role? It depends on what offensive coordinator you ask. Traditionally it is for a tight end, which is considered the H-back. It was made famous by Don Coryell, who would move Kellen Winslow everywhere on the field to create favorable matchups in the offense. However, over time it has evolved into doing it all players who can be ambiguous to any position on the field.
Lynn Bowden will fill that role in 2020 for the Raiders and will test Gruden’s creativity and schemes. It’s time to make this offense explosive.
Do it All Bowden.
Bowden did it all at the University of Kentucky. He was primarily a wide receiver during his first two seasons of college football. He was productive his sophomore year racking 725 yards on 67 receptions with 5 touchdowns.
In 2019 he started off strong again with 30 receptions over the first 5 games. But with all the quarterbacks injured, Bowden stepped up for his team and advised his coach he wanted to make the switch to the quarterback position.
As a starting QB for Wildcats, he was 6-2 and led the SEC in rushing with 1468 yards. According to Pro Football Focus, Bowden broke 48 tackles on his 166 designed runs. He finished the season with two straight 200-yard rushing performances helping the Wildcats finish the season with a winning record in a tough SEC conference.
Which brings all back to the Joker position that he is slated for at the next level. Gruden has a chance to display his creativity with Bowden and show off he’s ready for the modern NFL.
The Wildcat.
When you see a player ran for 1,468 yards while playing quarterback, the wild cat is the first formation that comes to mind. Bowden’s ability to be to force defenses to play 11 on 11 might lead to chunk yards in the running game.
The Wildcat was made famous by the late Tony Sparano and the Miami Dolphins in 2008. The formation with Reggie Brown even caught the great Bill Belichick off guard and helped lead the Dolphins to the playoffs.
Bowden was excellent running the zone read while playing quarterback for Kentucky. The play below is a perfect example. He does an excellent job of reading the linebackers, getting them to commit to the running back. Once they commit, he keeps and burst through the hole at full speed.
Against Virginia Tech, he had 233 rushing yards and helped them upset the Hokies. This play was to tie the game and was a quarterback draw on 3rd and 8.
Bowden does a great job making a man miss in the backfield, which then leads to him on another house call making defenders look silly on the way to a huge touchdown.
This element can help in the red zone, and Gruden can even do packages with all three running backs on the field. Gruden has tons of opportunities to open this up and create mismatches and havoc on defensive coordinators’ brains.
Targets out of the Backfield.
Bowden’s natural position is at wide receiver, where he primarily played in college. He brings that flavor to the table as well, and with him designated to play running back, linebackers might start shaking in their boots when he gets lined up outside.
A great play the Raiders have run before is the mesh/wheel play design from Chip Kelly. Kelly added a nice wrinkle to the Air Raid staple having the running back run a wheel route out of the backfield to create a one on one match up with the linebacker.
Against the Bengals back in 2018, the Raiders execute this play with Jalen Richard in the backfield. The mesh helps move the cornerback out of the position of the play, especially with man to man coverage. This gives Richard the one on one to the outside. He easily wins the matchup with a nice throw from Derek Carr for the explosive play.
Another great way to use Bowden is to move him out of the backfield into the slot. In 2016, Kyle Shanahan did this at a high amount with Tevin Coleman leading to large gains on offense.
Here it was against the Broncos in 2016. The Falcons move Tevin Coleman out of the backfield into the slot to Matt Ryan’s left. The Falcons will be running four verticals against Cover 2 man coverage out of 21 personnel (two running backs, one tight end).
This gets Coleman one on one with a linebacker in the slot. And with the safety learning towards Sanu, it opens up the middle of the field for Coleman and an easy pitch and catch for the touchdown.
Bowden can be used in a plethora of ways and will genuinely test Gruden’s creativity as a play-caller. If he can get the most of Bowden, this offense will hard to stop on any down and distance.
NBA DFS picks December 29: Never fold a Joker.

NBA DFS Shooting Guards:
The ceiling on Brad Beal is lower with Westbrook around, but Westbrook doesn’t kill Beal’s value the way John Wall did. Beal is a guy you can count on at the top. Booker is not. Paul George is an intriguing play if Kawhi is out since the chances of the Clippers going belly up against Minnesota aren’t good.
Jayson Tatum has been good to start the season, but honestly. I like Domantas Sabonis more in the head to head. Sabonis has just as much if not more upside than Tatum right now.
You don’t have to play them against each other though. Not with Julius Randle beasting for the Knicks right now. Randle has played at least 35 minutes in all three games and gets to take on a Cavs team that is undersized in the middle even when Love plays. It’s even worse when he’s out. This is a smash spot for Randle.
There’s no more Horford around to disrupt Pascal Siakam against Philly this year. Siakam is off to a strong start that could get stronger against a Philly team that doesn’t really have anyone that can handle Siakam well. Still, I think there’s more upside for Zion Williamson at about the same price.
Blake Griffin is one of my favorite plays of the night with Draymond out. The Warriors really are a mess right now, and even if Blake’s minutes are limited to around 30, he’ll have a nice night for this price.
Go ahead and lock in Larry Nance with Love out. He’s way too cheap on DraftKings and is cheap enough on FanDuel to use liberally.
There isn’t much value at PF tonight with Nance more appropriately priced. Bobby Portis is finally being used well in Milwaukee, so he’s a decent option. Jarred Vanderbilt played a nice role with Juancho ghosting Minnesota and Towns out. He racked up 27.25 DraftKings points while only scoring two actual points. That’s my kind of value play!
Andre Drummond, Cleveland Cavaliers, #3, (Photo by Jason Miller/Getty Images)
NBA DFS Centers:
Nikola Jokic had a dominant triple-double last night. What will he do for an encore against a Sacramento team that is also somewhat weak inside? The ceiling on Jokic is vaulted again tonight.
I wouldn’t fade Jokic to get Andre Drummond, but I like the prospect of playing them together on DraftKings. Drummond has been a force for Cleveland in the middle and New York doesn’t really have anyone that can stop him.
This is another big time spot for Nikola Vucevic, but will he really outscore Bam and Deandre Ayton? I really have my doubts.
Wendell Carter showed flashes of brilliance last year and did against the Warriors over the weekend. This is about as good as matchups get for Carter and he could see more opportunities if Markkanen is out. Carter us a solid value play tonight.
James Wiseman struggled against the Bulls, but don’t ride the rookie too hard for that. Statistically, the Bulls are top ten against centers in the early going. Wiseman is in a prime spot to rebound against the Pistons here.
Chris Boucher has been a force so far for the Raptors. So much so that they Raptors are going to have problems keeping him on the bench. I’m looking forward to seeing him grapple with Embiid in this one. Boucher wont break the slate like he did on Saturday, but he should still get close to 6x value.
Centers have pushed the Warriors around in the early going. That’s a good reason to go back to Mason Plumlee for value again. Plumlee’s low water mark through the first three games is 29.25 DraftKings points. He’s way too cheap right now.
Too bad the Clippers have a timeshare at center because this is a superb matchup for them. Instead I’m really considering running Naz Reid instead. Minnesota hasn’t let Reid play a ton of minutes, but he filled in pretty well for Towns in his first game out. Expect Reid to soak up more minutes as he gets more comfortable.

NBA DFS core plays:
Cash games are easier on large slates because you don’t need to take any big risks. This is still a tough cash slate because of all the high-priced stars on it.
Cash game staples:
Russell Westbrook, Wizards Brad Beal, Wizards Khris Middleton, Bucks Larry Nance, Cavs Nikola Jokic, Nuggets.
Last year in most weeks the GPP options did so well that most of them could have been used in cash as well. That is the exception, not the rule. Some of these guys are cash game viable, but all are probably best used in GPP formats.
Darius Garland, Cavs RJ Barrett, Knicks Jerami Grant, Pistons Julius Randle, Knicks Andre Drummond, Cavs.
Wizards Clippers Nuggets Cavs (GPP only) Pistons (GPP only) Bulls (GPP only)
Top value plays:
George Hill, Thunder Cole Anthony, Magic Luguentz Dort, Thunder Jarred Vanderbilt, Timberwolves Naz Reid, Timberwolves.
