2021 NFL playoff bracket and predictions: Who will win Super Bowl LV?
Just like that, the 2021 NFL season is in the books. Seventeen weeks and 256 regular-season games later, we can (finally) look ahead to what should be an exhilarating postseason.
This year’s playoff field looks a little different than you might be used to. We’ve got an extra Wild Card team in each conference, expanding the field to 14 teams. And this year, only one team in each conference will receive a first-round bye. You know what that means? We’re getting SIX games for Wild Card weekend.
Here’s a look at the bracket…
And the TV schedule for the Wild Card games…
SATURDAY.
1:05 EST: Colts @ Bills (CBS) 4:40 EST: Rams @ Seahawks (FOX) 8:15 EST: Buccaneers @ NFC East Winner.
SUNDAY.
1:05 EST: Ravens @ Titans (ABC/ESPN) 4:40 EST: Bears @ Saints (CBS) 8:15 EST: Browns @ Steelers (NBC)
Now, what would a playoff bracket be without some predictions? To get an idea of how things might shake out this month, we’ve called on our resident NFL experts Charles McDonald and Steven Ruiz to make their picks for each and every playoff game. Let’s take a look…
WILD CARD ROUND.
Steven: The Seahawks offense has looked broken for going on two months now, and Sean McVay will have adjustments to the adjustments we saw from Seattle’s defense when these teams played in Week 16. And Jared Goff, if he’s healthy, can’t play that poorly again, right?
Ravens-Titans and Steelers-Browns were the only other games that gave me pause. I chose the Ravens because their offense has finally figured things out and should be able to run at will on that struggling Titans defense. I picked the Steelers because (1) they’re the better team, and (2) they almost beat the Browns without Ben Roethlisberger or T.J. Watt.
Charles: I went with the Saints over the Bears for obvious reasons. Come on now, Mitch Trubisky ain’t getting past that defense. Same goes for Washington against Tampa Bay.
The most interesting games to me are Ravens-Titans and Steelers-Browns. I chose the Ravens because they seem to be hitting their stride. The offense is more organized, Lamar Jackson is playing beautiful football right now and the defense is still rock solid. Shutting down Derrick Henry and the Titans offense will be tough as hell, but the Ravens have the talent and coaching to slow them down. I went with the Browns over the Steelers because Ben Roethlisberger has turned into a shell of himself recently, but I’m a bit wary because the Browns let a Mason Rudolph and Josh Dobbs-led offense hang around until the final minute of the game. The Seahawks over the Rams was a tough pick, so I sided with the better quarterback.
DIVISIONAL ROUND.
Steven: I may have picked the Steelers, but I’m rooting for the Browns so we can get a Bills-Ravens matchup while the Steelers are sacrificed to the Chiefs. Alas. This way, we’re stuck with two rematches of blowouts we saw during the regular season on the AFC side. I don’t see any reason why those results would change.
On the NFC side, I didn’t even hesitate to take the Saints and Packers. New Orleans is just an awful matchup for Tampa Bay (on both sides of the ball) because it is one of the few teams that can match the Bucs’ talent. The Rams are just too flawed (at one position in particular) for me to trust them on the road against Aaron Rodgers.
Charles: Bills-Ravens is the potential game I’m most looking forward to this postseason. This is a much better version of Josh Allen than the one the Ravens faced last season and that’s part of the reason why I’m picking them to advance to the AFC Championship game. I think the Chiefs would buzzsaw the Browns. Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt can keep the Browns in the game for the majority of it, but at some point they would need Baker Mayfield to go throw-for-throw with Patrick Mahomes. Hard pass.
On the NFC side, I think the Packers have enough firepower to beat a Buccaneers defense that’s been a bit shaky lately. Rolling with the Saints over the Seahawks because Dennis Allen will have the Saints defense ready for whatever Brian Schottenheimer and the Seahawks offense throw at them.
CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS.
Steven: I’m a coward and went with chalk picks to make Championship Sunday. I’ve also been talking about how costly losing home-field advantage would be for the Saints and their 40-something quarterback, and yet here I am picking that 40-something quarterback to out-duel Rodgers on a freezing cold Lambeau Field. I do think the Saints could run at will on that Packers defense and the Saints have a defense capable of at least keeping Davante Adams in check, putting the play-making onus all on Rodgers. Anyway, if I picked Green Bay, I’d have the same Super Bowl pick as Charles and that’s boring.
Charles: I’m even more of a coward and picked both No. 1 seeds to make the Super Bowl. It’s not a very imaginative pick, but these are probably the two best teams in the NFL. Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes have been unbelievable this season and their play combined with the structure of their offenses makes their teams safe bets to make it to the Super Bowl. Like Steven said, the Saints can make things interesting if Alvin Kamara, Latavius Murray, and Taysom Hill turn into monsters on the ground, but keeping up with Rodgers will still prove difficult.
SUPER BOWL LV.
Steven: I’ve spent the whole season arguing that it’s a one-team league. I’m not going to change my take now. Kansas City’s many close calls over the last two months would scare me a lot more if we hadn’t already seen this team win a Super Bowl. I’m fully convinced they’re bored and have been on cruise control all season. When these teams played last month, the Saints defense did defend the Chiefs as well as anyone could have reasonably expected and … it just didn’t matter. Mahomes was too good. I don’t know if New Orleans can replicate that performance, so this one could end up a blowout.
Charles: The Chiefs are a good football team. They have the best player in the sport. That’s all the reasoning I need.

Who will win Super Bowl 2021? Pick, prediction, odds for Chiefs vs. Buccaneers in Super Bowl 55.
Super Bowl 55 features a generational quarterback matchup for all ages.
Which generation wins out? Tom Brady, 43, led the Buccaneers to a 31-26 victory against Green Bay in the NFC championship game at Lambeau Field on Sunday. Brady will be making his 10th Super Bowl appearance and has a chance to win his seventh Super Bowl championship – an unprecedented accomplishment considering the move from New England to Tampa Bay in the offseason.
Will Patrick Mahomes, 25, break that record in the not-so distant future. Mahomes led Kansas City to a 38-24 victory against Buffalo in the AFC championship game Sunday. The Chiefs earned the opportunity to be the first back-to-back Super Bowl champions since Brady led New England to back-to-back titles in 2003-04.
Kansas City opened as a 3.5-point favorite to win Super Bowl 55.
Of course, Mahomes and Brady have interesting supporting casts. Mahomes' favorite targets – Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce – combined for 290 yards and two TDs in the AFC championship game. Rookie Clyde Edwards-Helaire returned from a hip injury, and Tyrann Mathieu leads an opportunistic defense that is used to playing with the lead. Will former Steelers running back Le'Veon Bell play a role in Super Bowl 55? Vetearn coach Andy Reid also has a chance to win a second Super Bowl.
Brady has the support of a two-headed running game in Ronald Jones II and Leonard Fournette. Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and Rob Gronkowski fill out the receiving corps. Devin White and Lavonte Davis are two of the NFL's best linebackers, and veteran Ndamukong Suh finally gets to play in a Super Bowl. Will former Steelers receiver Antonio Brown play a role in the Super Bowl 55? Veteran coach Bruce Arians has a chance to win his Super Bowl.
Both teams are loaded at the most important positions.
Super Bowl 2021 pick, prediction.
The Chiefs beat the Buccaneers 27-24 in Week 12 in a game where Mahomes and Brady put on a show. Mahomes finished 37 of 49 for 462 yards and three TDs – and most of that was on big-play connections with Hill.
Hill torched the Tampa Bay defense with scores of 75, 44 and 20 yards, respectively, and those big plays staked Kansas City out to a 27-10 lead.
Tampa Bay's secondary will have to make adjustments with defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, and that will be tougher knowing safety Antoine Winfield Jr missed the NFC championship game and Jordan Whitehead left with an injury.
Kelce presents another problem in the middle of the field. He had eight catches for 82 yards in the first meeting and can test White and David in the middle of the field. Jason Pierre-Paul and Shaquil Barrett combined for five sacks on Aaron Rodgers in the NFC championship game, but Mahomes is more mobile at this point in his career. Kansas City offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy can be creative with the running back committee of Edwards-Helaire, Darrel Williams and Bell to put a running game on top of all that.
Brady led a fourth-quarter rally with a pair of fourth-quarter TDs to Mike Evans in the first meeting, but the passing game isn't just limited to Godwin and Gronkowski. Scotty Miller, Tyler Johnson and Cameron Brate play their roles within the passing game, and Brown, who suffered a knee injury in the divisional playoffs, gives offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich more than enough to work with, especially with the two-headed rushing attack of Jones and Fournette, who had just three carries in the first meeting.
Brady knows Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo well. He was the Giants' coordinator in the Super Bowl victory against the Patriots in 2007, and he will rely on Alex Okafor and Frank Clark to generate pressure. Mathieu and Bashaud Breeland had interceptions in the first meeting.
All of that is window dressing for what should be another thriller between Brady and Mahomes. They have split four previous meetings, which included the 37-31 thriller in the 2018 AFC championship game. Brady led the game-winning TD drive in overtime without letting the Chiefs touch the ball, and the Buccaneers have not lost since that regular-season defeat to Kansas City this season.
Plus, Tampa Bay is playing in their home stadium. It takes a special team to knock off Brady in a Super Bowl, and the Buccaneers have made a NFC wild-card run on the road. Brady is playing with as much confidence as ever. They will be a tougher challenge this time around.
The Chiefs remain that team to beat. Mahomes returned from a concussion suffered in the AFC divisional playoffs and showed no rust against the Bills with 325 yards and three TDs. It's that combination of wow plays and calm within the system that makes Mahomes the quarterback for the next generation.
Brady will make him earn it, but the Chiefs finish off a season impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic with a victory in a thrilling finish. Mahomes earns Super Bowl MVP honors, and Kansas City heads into 2021-22 looking for a three-peat.
It plays out like the regular-season meeting, but each team tacks on another score.

2020 College Football Crystal Ball: Playoff Picks, Dark-Horse Predictions and More.
The 2020 college football season promises to be unlike any other. With only 76 of the 130 FBS programs currently playing this fall, fan attendance reduced or even eliminated across the country and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic still threatening postponements and cancellations, the next few months are shaping up to be a roller-coaster ride.
Three of the five Power 5 conferences (ACC, Big 12, SEC) will kick off in September, while the Big Ten and Pac-12 remain sidelined until a potential winter or spring season. While the fall 2020 season officially started last week, the first Power 5 action comes Thursday night, when Miami hosts UAB. The SEC, meanwhile, won't start until Sept. 26, with plans to play a 10-game conference-only season.
Despite the uniqueness of 2020, all signs point to there still being a traditional College Football Playoff and national champion. Last month, Sports Illustrated 's Ross Dellenger and Pat Forde revealed their preseason top 16. Now, they're back with their playoff picks, plus predictions for dark horse, biggest disappointment, breakout player and more.
USA TODAY Sports.
College Football Playoff Predictions:
Who will win the national championship?
Forde : Clemson. Trevor Lawrence exits college football with one of the great three-season rГ©sumГ©s in the game's history, making the CFP title game every season and winning two of the three. But the big stat-maker for the Tigers might be running back Travis Etienne, since Lawrence is working with a less experienced receiving corps. With the return of a dominant defensive line, Clemson will get back to manhandling opponents up front.
Dellenger : Clemson. Behind Lawrence’s big arm, Etienne’s big legs and a nasty defense, the Tigers will claim their third national championship in the last five years, even if this one will come with an asterisk. For the first time in a while, the Tigers may actually get tested in the regular season. Circle their Nov. 7 matchup with Notre Dame.
Which Power 5 team will be the biggest disappointment?
Forde : Here's a weird trend: The season after Auburn beats Alabama, there is a notable regression. In 2011, after winning the national title the previous season, the Tigers went 8–5. In 2014, after playing for the national title the previous season, the Tigers went 8–5. In 2018, after winning the 10 games and the SEC West the previous season, the Tigers went—you guessed it—8–5. While quarterback Bo Nix is back this season and should take a step forward in his play, there are major personnel losses to deal with in addition to the usual brutal schedule.
Dellenger : LSU. A year after rolling to a 15–0 record and the national title, the Tigers are in rebuilding mode. They lost a whopping 17 starters off that squad, including Heisman winner Joe Burrow and his best three receivers. Four players opted out, and several more transferred. LSU’s 10-game, SEC-only schedule includes trips to Florida, Auburn and Texas A&M and home a game against Alabama.
Which under-the-radar team will be a surprise playoff contender?
Forde : If Oklahoma State can put its summer of tumult behind it and figure out its Oklahoma problem, the Cowboys could win the Big 12 and make the playoff field. Mike Gundy might have the best running back (Chuba Hubbard) and the best wide receiver (Tylan Wallace) in the country, plus a returning quarterback and nearly his entire starting defense. The Sooners are the major impediment, per usual, having beaten Oklahoma State five straight times. But if ever there were going to be a year for the Pokes, this looks like it.
Dellenger : We’re not quite sure how “under-the-radar” Notre Dame is, but the Irish are definitely a playoff contender. However, we’ll go even more off the radar for this pick: North Carolina. Coach Mack Brown seems to have the Tar Heels roaring, and with talented QB Sam Howell calling the shots and no Clemson on the regular season schedule, Mack might be back to leading a team to a championship.
Which coach will be on the hottest seat by midseason?
Forde : On Oct. 10, Vanderbilt will host South Carolina. The losing coach in that game—Vandy's Derek Mason or South Carolina's Will Muschamp—is going to be feeling a lot of heat. Especially since both teams could be 0–2 going into that contest. Muschamp is in Year 5 and Mason in Year 7; by the end of it, the only thing saving them both might be department finances that make buyouts prohibitive.
Dellenger : Like the players themselves, this COVID-19 year might give the coaches a free pass. That said, Mason is sliding on some thin ice lately and it might just crack beneath the weight of a 10-game, SEC-only schedule. The Commodores’ first three games: at Texas A&M, LSU and South Carolina.
Who will be the fall's biggest breakout player?
Forde : Alabama receiver–kick returner Jaylen Waddle is hardly an unknown, but now he's moving into a starring role for the Crimson Tide after losing two first-round draft picks at his position. Waddle scored eight touchdowns in 2019: six receiving, one on a punt return and one on a kickoff return. That total should rise with an increased number of targets in the Alabama passing game.
Dellenger : Not sure we’ll see anything like what LSU QB Joe Burrow did in 2019, but Tennessee RB Eric Gray seems destined for stardom this year. The sophomore exploded last last season as the Volunteers’ best running back, and he’ll be working behind one of the SEC’s most experienced offensive lines. College football will know his name by November.

NFL Playoff Predictions: Who Will Win Super Bowl LV?
The NFL playoff field is bigger than ever. We have six games on wild-card weekend and 13 total, including Super Bowl LV. The NFL remains determined to play each game as scheduled, as was made clear throughout a regular season played amid the COVID-19 pandemic. There is, unfortunately, the possibly that positive tests will wipe out practices and make key players unavailable.
Despite the unpredictability, or maybe because of that potential chaos, our staffers have gravitated heavily toward the top seeds and favorites in our staff picks. Here's who our writers and editors have ticketed for the big game.
ALBERT BREER.
Chiefs 27, Saints 20 MVP: Patrick Mahomes.
Lots of chalk here? Sure. But I think home field advantage will matter in this year’s playoffs with teams more worn down than normal. And I came really close to sticking with the Saints to win the whole thing—this really is the current group’s last shot, if you look at next year’s cap situation. But I can’t bet against Mahomes on the big stage.
JENNY VRENTAS.
Chiefs 31, Packers 24 MVP: Patrick Mahomes.
Perhaps even harder than achieving success in the NFL is sustaining it. Which is why it has been so impressive that the defending champion Chiefs earned their conference’s top seed, while the Packers came back better after last season’s trip to the NFC championship game. We should point out that no team is entering the playoffs with more momentum than the Bills, which could potentially set up a thrilling AFC championship game matchup. But the Chiefs have continued to find ways to win games all season. They are now what the Patriots were for most of this millennium, the team it was unwise to pick against. While Andy Reid had a long wait for his first ring as a head coach, you’d be hard-pressed to find someone in the NFL who does not think it will be a much shorter wait for his second.
CONOR ORR.
Packers 42, Bills 31 MVP: Aaron Rodgers.
While this will come with a twinge of disappointment for a Bills fan base that is sensitive to the prospect of losing Super Bowls, they can walk away from this game against the Packers knowing it won't be another few decades before they are back.
MICHAEL ROSENBERG.
Chiefs 38, Packers 35 MVP: Patrick Mahomes.
These predictions come down to guessing the upsets. Do I feel great about picking Washington to beat a much more talented Tampa team? I do not. But you’re looking at a man who picked the Lions to sneak into the playoffs. Public humiliation is sort of my thing. Washington has the formula to beat Tom Brady’s team: elite pass rush led by star rookie Chase Young and a QB, Alex Smith, who does not beat his own team.
The Super Bowl picks are admittedly boring, but 1) with only one team in each conference getting a bye, that feels like a big advantage, 2) Aaron Rodgers has deserved better than he has gotten in the postseason and is playing some of the best ball of his career, and 3) the Chiefs are still pretty clearly the best team in the league. They were also my preseason pick, which should count for absolutely nothing except that I am a stubborn fool who desperately clings to the rare occasions when I am correct.
GREG BISHOP.
Chiefs 35, Saints 21 MVP: Patrick Mahomes.
In the most uncertain of seasons, I’ve come to believe that there are four teams that stand slightly above the rest of the field: the Chiefs, Bills, Packers and Saints. As such, I don’t see as many upsets, except in the No. 4 vs. 5 games where the No. 4 seeds are evenly matched (Tennessee) or overly so (Washington). No reason to get cute here. The Bills have played as well as any team in football down the stretch, and I like Buffalo’s chances against Mahomes and Kansas City. What a game that should be. The Packers have played as well as any team this season, and I like Green Bay’s chances against New Orleans, particularly at home. But I picked the two teams that I think are the most balanced right now to win. That’s Kansas City and New Orleans, two franchises that can vanquish foes in myriad ways, that can run the ball or throw it, that can play stout D. These are two of the most fun offenses in the NFL to watch. Two of the best coaches. Two legendary quarterbacks. The difference, as always, is Mahomes, which he’ll prove in February to announce the NFL’s next dynasty in Kansas City.
ANDREW BRANDT.
Packers 38, Titans 17 MVP: Aaron Rodgers.
I picked the Packers over the Titans in the Super Bowl in August and I am not backing down now. As for the Packers, that now seems like the safest bet anyone could make, although I was somewhat lonely on that hill before the season. The Titans? Yes, I know their defense is suspect and they've had deficiencies but I believe they are a team built for the playoffs, especially in bad weather (as long as it is not snow at Lambeau Field, like we saw in Week 16). And yes, I believe they will be in the same position they were last year—visiting the Chiefs for the AFC championship—but this time will not let their lead evaporate.
Their storybook run, however, will end with MVP Aaron Rodgers showing why he is so much more valuable than near-MVP Derrick Henry. I’m biased as always, yes, but the Pack is back.
GARY GRAMLING.
Chiefs 24, Saints 19 MVP: Chris Jones.
My dark horse prediction of Colts over Eagles looks less likely by the day, and those fat cats in Washington won't let me pick a Chiefs-Bills Super Bowl, so I'll revert to what I deem the boring pick for unimaginative losers: The NFL's best team beating the NFL's most complete team. I don't have a whole lot more to say about this uninspired, chalky bracket. I picked the Rams over the Seahawks as my only real upset this coming weekend (the Ravens are three-point favorites, they don't count) because I had to pick one, but that's only in a scenario where Jared Goff and Andrew Whitworth return.
