History of the British Open.
Established in 1860, and held at the Prestwick Golf Club in Ayrshire, Scotland, The British Open was initially an eight golfer tournament playing three rounds on a twelve-hole course. The first event was strictly an invitational, but the following year, with pleas from the community, was turned into an open championship for professionals and amateurs alike.
Today, the tournament has grown to a 72-hole stroke-play contest that hosts 156 players each year. It is the official event of the PGA Tour, European Tour, and Japan Golf Tour.
In the early days, it was commonly referred to as ‘The Championship’ or the ‘Amateur Championship’, but around 1885 it became customary to refer to it as ‘The Open’. After inspiring many other open tournaments, they added the British element to their name to differentiate themselves from the US Open and newer open tournaments.
The trophy for the British Open is the Claret Jug, which was introduced in 1873, replacing the Challenge Belt. The original trophy remains at R&A’s Clubhouse in St. Andrews and each year an engraved replica is awarded to the ‘Champion Golfer of the Year’.

2021 British Open Course.
The British Open is always held on a coastal links golf course , thought of as the ‘purest’ form of golf and the closest to the 15th century Scottish roots.
