There is buzz growing about Oklahoma State freshman Cade Cunningham potentially being the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, and he will have the opportunity to sparkle on a big stage on Saturday in Stillwater, Okla., against No. 6 Texas.
The Longhorns got a 77-74 win, but failed to cover, when these two hooked up in December, and Cunningham led all players with 25 points. For the season, he is averaging 18.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game while making 39.7 percent of his 3-point shots.
Texas will look to neutralize and offset all Cunningham does by winning on the inside. To do so, the Longhorns will need to cut down on the fouls. In true road games, Texas is fouling on 28.4 percent of its defensive possessions, which ranks 337th in the nation.
In the first meeting, ball movement was lacking for both teams. Oklahoma State doled out just seven assists and Texas nine. Both teams are amassing more turnovers per game than assists.
Each of Oklahoma State’s top five scorers who have made at least one 3-point shot is making at least 35.7 percent of them, and Texas has allowed four of its last five opponents to shoot at least 36 percent from 3-point range. The Cowboys have what it takes to shoot their way to victory and allow Cunningham’s draft stock to continue to skyrocket.

7-round, 10-pick Cowboys Mock Draft: Defense and more defense.
With the playoffs careening towards a conclusion and the Dallas Cowboys now several weeks removed from the end of their 2020 season, it’s time to expand the mock. We’re now running a seven-round exercise to help get a better grasp on the talent that could be available at certain points of the season. This week, the defense gets a bunch of help for Dan Quinn.
In real life draft news, the number of eligible prospects has been capped. Underclassmen and seniors who opted out of the 2020 season for COVID-19 concerns had until Monday to declare for the 2021 draft. They still have two days to change their minds, but no more can be added. Here’s a link to the current list. Also, the NFL has scrapped the scouting combine and in-person workouts, meaning that information will be tough to come by until Pro Days, and there’s still no idea how all of that translates. It’s going to be the wild, wild west for the 2021 draft season.
With that in mind, in this iteration there’s a heavy focus on defense. The thinking is, without as much information, more darts have to be thrown at the board so there are more chances of hitting the bulls eye. The team cannot risk not increasing the talent level of the defense so in this exercise conducted on The Draft Network’s Mock Draft Simulator, we centrally focus on that mission.
The first six picks are devoted; first attacking the defensive line, shifting priorities to the secondary, then back to the line and finally the linebackers. From there, some help for the offense, getting some depth for the line and the wideout positions.
TRADE: Send 1.10, 3.99, 6.221 to Jacksonville for 1.25, 2.46, 3.65.
Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports.
Trade Value Chart says:
No. 25 - Christian Barmore, DL, Alabama.
Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports.
6-foot-5, 310 pounds.
Barmore has an already rock solid and mature upper body that makes it hard for blockers to engage and stick against his body. The Alabama interior defender possesses outstanding raw power combined with active/busy and powerful hands that enable his frame to remain clean and disengage when necessary. Excellent with executing swim/arm over moves that allow him to make plays behind the line or in his gap as a run defender. As a redshirt freshman, he was treated mostly as a third down specialist prior to the final four games of the season. He has the versatility to play 1 or 3-technique in an even front, but he’s spent most of his time as a base 4i/4-technique in Alabama’s odd front. This is a prospect that’s only scratching the surface of what he could become and with an expanded role in 2020, it shouldn’t be surprising to see him skyrocket up draft boards.
No. 42 - Jaelan Phillips, Edge, Miami.
(Matt Gentry/The Roanoke Times via AP, Pool)
6-foot-5, 258 pounds.
A consensus 5-star recruit, Miami EDGE Jaelan Phillips played his first two seasons at UCLA before transferring to Miami where everything came together in 2020. Phillips was flashy at UCLA but played a modest amount of snaps across 11 games in two seasons. Ankle, wrist, and concussion issues limited his time on the field for UCLA before his move to Miami. Phillips’ performance in 2020 was exactly what the Bruins thought they were getting in the former prized recruit. A balanced defender, Phillips is a playmaker against the run and pass, where his exciting blend of size, length, power, technique, and athleticism make him a challenge for offenses to neutralize. Phillips is a versatile player that has experience playing with his hand in the dirt on the edge, rushing from interior alignments, and playing in space in a standup role—which makes him a fit for all teams in the NFL. The areas of concern for Phillips entering the NFL are playing with better pad level, developing consistency with his hand technique, and becoming more consistent reducing his surface area while establishing a half-man relationship with his opponents as a pass rusher. Phillips has all the makings of an impact defender at the next level, although a large sample size of high-level production in college would have been preferred.
No. 46 - Trevon Moehrig, Safety, TCU.
Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports.
6-foot-1, 208 pounds.
Trevon Moehrig is a free safety that has satisfied multiple roles for the Horned Frogs. A consistent and urgent single-high player, he’s a free-flowing mover that’s at his best when able to patrol the middle of the field. With seven career interceptions, he’s proven to not only be a constant ball disruptor, but he’s a safety that can change the momentum of games by getting the ball back to his team. His biggest improvements must come in run support, as he’s a safety that isn’t afraid to come up and tackle, but his tactics and aggressiveness while doing so can be out of control. Moehrig is also reliable in man coverage, but his eye discipline while doing so will need to improve as he is premature with looking back to the quarterback, which is why he’s been a popular double-move target for opposing offenses.
No. 65 - Paulson Adebo, CB, Stanford.
D. Ross Cameron-USA TODAY Sports.
6-foot-1, 190 pounds.
Paulson Adebo aligns at cornerback for the Cardinal defense. He plays the position with very good athleticism, as evidenced by his hips and his overall agility while in coverage. He is a loose athlete with the hip flexibility to open and run upfield. He demonstrates good agility in off coverage to close separation at the top of the route. He plays with the instincts and football IQ necessary to thrive in zone situations. He has very good ball skills to locate and track, while also demonstrating the competitiveness to close and get his hands on the football.
No. 74 - Tyler Shelvin, DL, LSU.
Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports.
6-foot-3, 362 pounds.
A 5-star recruit in 2017, LSU defensive lineman Tyler Shelvin redshirted his first year on campus, found some playing time as a redshirt freshman in 2018, and showcased his dominant run-stopping ability as a starter in 2019 before opting out of the 2020 season. Shelvin is a straightforward evaluation—he’s a massive interior defensive lineman who is outstanding against the run but doesn’t offer much on passing downs outside of pushing the pocket. Shelvin isn’t a dynamic run defender simply because he’s big and strong, he knows how to fit his hands, find the football, disengage, and finish. Shelvin plays with tremendous urgency on every snap and competes hard in pursuit despite limited range. He’s dominant against single blocks and more than holds his own against doubles. For a guy who is going to be asked to fill an unselfish role in the NFL, he embraces taking on blocks, absorbing double teams, eating space, and keeping the second-level clean. Shelvin has the makings of a dominant run-stuffing 3-4 nose tackle or 4-3 one-technique, but his value is limited to running downs.
